How to Reach the Refuge

Travel by Your Own Boat

. . . as the original inhabitants and explorers did.

Buffer Zones Protect an Endangered Species

Approaching some islands in the Aleutians and Gulf of Alaska is restricted because the beaches shelter breeding colonies of the endangered Steller sea lion.

Check with National Marine Fisheries Service to find the most current rules for buffer zones, restricted activities, and a list of sea lion rookeries (choose Steller sea lion) and maps.

Private Lands within Refuge Boundaries

Some military and private lands are within refuge boundaries. Permission is needed to visit them. Learn more.

Good Stewards of the Sea

Some habits of marine birds and animals place them at risk with visitors. Following our handy tips for mariners will help you protect the wildlife and yourself.

Caution - World War II Battle Ground

During the 1942-43 campaign to recapture the refuge islands of Attu and Kiska, many thousands of tons of bombs and other explosive devices were dropped on those islands - and others in the Aleutian Chain. Perimeter defenses were laid around many islands.

Live remnants, buried under the grasses or disguised as rusty debris, remain a danger today. Learn more about war zone dangers (pdf) before you step ashore in the Aleutians.
