Hunting Caribou

Unimak Island

Unimak Island is the only island where caribou are native on the Alaska Maritime Refuge. Unimak lies at the tip of the Alaska Peninsula, about 700 miles from Anchorage and 30 miles from the regional service center of Cold Bay.

Brown bears also are hunted on Unimak Island, but permits are limited and drawn by lottery for fall and spring seasons.

Unimak Island is a National Wilderness Area. Although part of the Alaska Maritime Refuge, it is managed from Cold Bay by the staff of the adjacent Izembek National Wildlife Refuge Contact them for details and a list of guides and transportation companies authorized to operate on refuge lands of Unimak Island.

Contact the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (800-478-2376) for Alaska Resident and Non-resident hunting regulations on Unimak Island (Game Management Unit 10). Subsistence-qualified residents may contact U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Subsistence Management
