Refuge Store
A
store inside the Alaska Islands & Ocean Visitor Center offers an intriguing
selection of nature guides, children's items, curricula, books, clothing, maps
and postcards. Items featuring the refuge include the 30-minute film "Journey
of the Tiglax."
Filmed
on location, "Journey of the Tiglax" (available in DVD and VHS)
takes you along to the remote islands of the Alaska Maritime Refuge aboard its
research support ship M/V Tiglax ("eagle" in Aleut and pronounced TEKH-lah).
You see smoking volcanoes, the underwater ballet of northern
fur seals, and intimate looks at the nesting seabirds and their chicks, just as
the wildlife biologists do each summer in their studies. The film was a finalist
in the 2003 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.
Many of the items available
in the store may be purchased online from the Alaska Geographic who operates the store. Alaska Geographic
is a nonprofit partner of the Alaska Maritime Refuge and other public lands supporting
their educational programs through publishing and the operation of educational
book stores.
Membership in the Alaska Natural History Association benefits
future projects of the refuge and entitles you to a 15% discounts on all items
purchased in the refuge shop, online,
or from similar organizations around the state and nation.
